Good morning, Jesus.

Lord, regardless if I feel good or I’m in a bad mood, Your mandate to praise You in all things is not cancelled. By Your Spirit we’re able to not worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done (Philippians 4:6). So who am I to withhold worship from You? When I list Your blessings, worshipping becomes joyful—You’ve forgiven all my sins, healed my physical and spiritual maladies, redeemed me from a hopeless, meaningless life, and showered me with the love and compassion I’ve sought all my life but eluded me. These blessings have renewed my enthusiasm for life (Psalm 103). Life is good. You, God are good. Living so blessed, I can’t help but praise You in all things!

May we never forget the events that transpired on December 7, 1941, when all the world was plunged into darkness when the Empire of Japan attacked the U S fleet at Pearl Harbor. Lord, may we never have such a catastrophic event be the cause of us uniting as a people. Bring us together again through Your Spirit and may we have humble, repentant hearts. This division has ripped us apart where only You can heal and unite us. Be merciful to Your people, Lord God.

Living in Your blessings, Lord, Amen.

Good morning, Jesus.

Lord, when I consider the impact of my redemption by Your cross and Your grace extended to me when none was deserved, how can I act other than with humility? You are the one who gave me hope and a future? The results derived from self-help books and videos depend on our own efforts to bring personal improvements. Self-made happiness is fleeting. However, the godly contentment, peace and meaning in life Your followers live in comes only after committing to follow You. Before coming to You, the secular world told us repeatedly living for You is boring and repressive. Who wants to be a Christ-followers since they have no fun in life? Nothing is further from the truth. Life isn’t always fair, but God is good. When unbelievers’ lives fall apart and they have no answers, You’re faithful to always be there, offering Your grace and forgiveness. You are what they are looking for. Jesus, real life is found in You.

Thank You for giving each of Your followers a purpose and meaning in this life, Jesus. Amen.

Good morning, Jesus.

Lord, from a heart of love and gratitude I desire to please You. Once You redeemed me, You own me. You went right to work within me to refine my faith so I’m empowered to do Your will and fulfill Your purpose (Philippians 2:13). I pray my obedience to Your Spirit’s leading influences those around me to seek You in all things. Even if You purposely lead me outside my comfort zone, may I not fuss and resist, but recognize that’s Your way of developing deeper faith and godly character in me. You never promised living for You would always be easy, just rewarding.

Bless our obedience so You will receive all the glory, Jesus. In Your authoritative name, amen.

Good morning, Jesus.

Lord, how did I get so far off track? Don’t You remember how I wanted to throw my hands up and quit. You heard my frustration—“I can’t do this!” I felt like the biggest failure in the family of God. But in Your grace, You put Your arm around my shoulder and steered me back on to the right course. “My child, of course you can’t do that,” You said. “I didn’t call you to change people, I called you to love people. You can’t change people to be like you think they should be no matter how hard you try. How can You change others when you couldn’t even change yourself? Changing people is My job, not yours. I AM the only One who can change their heart, like I changed your heart. You just love them like I do (John 15:12). I’ll handle the changing part.”

As a nation, and individually, we repent of our wandering ways, looking everywhere for answers to perplexities except looking to You, Lord God. Forgive us. Only You can heal our nation. Only You can change the hearts of men to seek You and live according to Your precepts and values. So be it, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Lord, secular society is quick to label people by their failures. No matter how much self-improvement they undergo, their past is never forgotten. The stains of their past mistakes are never erased. Not so for Christ-followers. In the Kingdom of God, all who have placed their faith in Christ, our past failures and sins do not identify who we are. According to Your Word, 2 Corinthians 5:17 clearly states “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun.” I’ll take a moment and let this great truth sink into my spirit. The enemy of our soul uses any lie or unfair method to remind us of past transgressions. May we confidently remind the devil our identity is found in You, meaning we no longer have a past—we have now a meaningful God-destined future with You.

Bless and protect those on the front lines battling the covin-19. We pray this virus is eradicated from the earth. Bless and protect first responders, police, firefighters, and emergency personnel. Bless and protect our men and women in uniform around the world. May we always show our appreciation to all who serve us.

Thankful to live as a new creation by the power of God and in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Lord, on this Thanksgiving 2020, for many, uncertainties seems to be the only ‘certainty.’ But in Your grace, You reassure us, “Do not be anxious. Be still and know that I AM God. I AM your ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:10,11). The events of 2020 didn’t catch You by surprise. You have a divine plan and it is unfolding before us. Help us redirect our anxious thoughts toward You to find comfort and hope in Your timeless promises. Our circumstances may or may not change, however, as Your Spirit changes our thoughts, our behaviors change and we find peace, living in the increased Christ-like character You’re developing in us. Help us see Your hand in all this, Lord.

Bless and protect the medical workers. first responders, police and firefighters putting their health in danger ministering to those poor souls stricken with the virus. Give them renewed energy and divine strength to carry on. Help their families understand what they are going through during this pandemic and show us how to support them.

Thankful You are always our ever-present help in times of trouble, Jesus. Amen.

Lord, I’m thankful salvation is all on You. Our good deeds, no matter how noble in our eyes, play no part in our salvation. You do it all. You seek us first to initiate our relationship with You. Even the faith to believe the truth of Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins is from You. What do You want us to bring to the altar? Nothing except our sins and a grateful heart. Our human tendency wants to “earn” salvation by following rules, or observing traditions or partaking in sacraments, but these things do not save us. Only Your grace. Nothing need to be added. By Your grace, You transfer our sins on Jesus and give us His righteousness. Your grace is sufficient. We need to add nothing.  Our part? Just accept what You do (Ephesians 2:4–10).

Thankful You do it all, Lord God. Amen.

Good morning Jesus

Lord, we thank You for blessing us so America can be a blessing to the world. May we never make apologies for Your blessings and grace upon us. The Pilgrims sought a country where they could worship freely, and our founding fathers called upon You for wisdom and guidance through biblical values. The world can count on America’s help when catastrophes strike anywhere in the world. The liberties and freedoms guaranteed to its citizens are still the envy of the world, but today, Lord, we’re broken. America wanders from the paths of righteousness far too often. As a nation, and individually, may we repent of our ungodly ways and return to living and governing by Your values. Only then can America live up to her God-given destiny. As Your endless truth declares, “Godliness makes a nation great, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).

Praying for God’s grace and godliness to reign in our country again. Amen.

Thursday, November 19, 2020

Lord, You came to comfort the brokenhearted, to heal our wounded souls, to break the chains of sin that held us captive and to redeem our fallen spirit by giving Your life as a sacrifice for sin (Isaiah 61:1). Those who cried out for mercy You welcomed to the mercy-seat in heaven (Hebrews 4:16). Therefore, today I can walk in confident faith, knowing there is nothing I will encounter, no trial I will face, no insurmountable mountain blocking my path that Jesus completed work on the cross has not already conquered.

Lord Jesus, You have done it all. We need nothing else but more of You, Jesus. Amen.

Don’t Curry, Be Happy

My retired Navy buddy, Bruce, a.k.a., the Admiral and your humble Aggie scribe eat lunch regularly. At one luncheon, he introduced me to sushi. I barely survived that near-death experience.

During his 20-year Navy stint, the Admiral sailed the four corners of the earth. He savored delicacies from Greece to Indonesia to Dadgum, Oklahoma. Before that harrowing sushi incident, my simple diet ranged from macaroni and cheese to the chili dogs off the catering truck. Taking a step of presumptuous faith, I agreed to have lunch with him again.

“There’s an Indian cuisine in Coppell,” the Admiral said. “I remember this place as exceptional.”

After the sushi incident, I questioned his definition of ‘exceptional.

We pulled into the parking lot of an Indian cuisine whose name I couldn’t pronounce even if I didn’t stutter. The second I set foot inside, I felt like I’d walked into a nuclear blast. My gut warned me: Hey, you thought sushi was bad?

“Your gonna love this food,” the Admiral said, handing me some napkins to dry my eyes and damp my sweaty hair. The Admiral ordered us drinks. The waiter brought a yellowish substance in a tall glass. It poured as easily as axle grease in the Antarctic.

I grimaced and took a sip. Kinda tasty. Still, I couldn’t look at it.

The Admiral motioned with his hand. “Let’s hit the buffet.”

“You know I have Crohn’s Disease, don’t you?” It was too late. I psyched myself up and cautiously approached the buffet. Do I need my eyes checked? Are the entrées wiggling?

Steam hovered above the buffet and fogged my glasses. As I wiped my glasses, I notice no burners under the food trays. Was this buffet a source of global warming? And I left my welding gloves at home! A sign over the buffet stated: “Indian FoodRedefined”.I wondered what the food was like before it needed a new definition.I stared through the window at the Whataburger across the street.

Surely there is something here safe to eat,” I thought. “This steamed rice looks okay. Hmmm. What’s those little brown flakes in the rice?” I’ve never seen chicken pakora at KFC but plopped it onto the rice. “This couldn’t be worse than sushi.” Something resembling mashed potatoes didn’t look life-threatening, so I added this mystery substance to some carefully picked out veggies. I passed on the flat bread that looked like it had tire tracks embedded in the crust.

The Kadai Goat caught my attention. I faced a goat-or-no-goat decision. The tray of steaming goat seemed to be calling my name. “You know Bible people ate goat,” I thought the Holy Spirit said. Should I try the Kadai Goat, or use common sense and sneak off to IHOP down the street? The well-being of my Crohn’sDisease rested on my decision. My internal ‘inspirational-story-writer’ Jimmy made a valid point: Maybe if I eat goat it will make a good story . . . then again.” I made my decision. (You’re reading this story, aren’t you?) Trembling, I plopped some goat onto my plate. I didn’t have the heart to tell my stomach what lay ahead. It would find out soon enough.

The Admiral waited at the table. “I demand we seek God before eating.” I prayed, wailing loudly like an Old Testament prophet crying for mercy.

The Admiral attacked his plate as if he were born and raised in Calcutta.

Those little brown flakes in the safe rice scorched my taste buds. Pakora chicken was doable until the curry hit my tongue. (On the plus side, it did cure my speech impediment.) Cardboard would have tasted better than the mashed potato looking substance.

“Oh, Lord”, I prayed, please don’t let this goat be someone I knew or have worked with.” The curry-laden goat scorched my nose-hairs. Immediately, I realized I did not hear from the Holy Spirit. Sweat ran down my face. After the first swallow, my stomach Tweeted my brain: @sensitivestomach—You’re with the Admiral again, aren’t you?

“Isn’t this great!” the Admiral said. “You’re not cleaning your plate,”

It was good my watery eyes prevented me from seeing clearly enough to strangle him. But after all, he was my ride home.

Picking at this strange food made me wondered if the Corinthian believers felt this way. They went to great troubles not to eat anything they thought offered to an idol. The Apostle Paul instructed the Corinthian Christ-followers in protocol when dining out. Pagans sacrificed to their idols and then sold the meats in the markets. He said to “eat whatever is put before you and if it was offered to idols, no big deal. Man-made idols have no power” (1 Corinthians 10:17). The Holy Spirit brought another Scripture to mind, Psalm 5:11—God will cover us with his protection when we need it the most. My biggest concern was that the Curse of the Curry would attack my Crohn’s Disease, which God put in remission. I wanted to keep it that way. Because of God’s protection, my Crohn’s-laden digestive tract could sing, Don’t curry—be happy!

“Thank You, Lord, Your protection is with me wherever I go.”

Stay close to Jesus.

Jimmy

P.S. The waiter placed a yellow Caution Wet Floor safety cone beside the table. The sweat pouring off my head created a puddle on the floor.
