Good morning, Jesus.

Lord, when we committed to following You, we chose to submit to Your leading. However, in our humanity, not knowing what’s ahead can be unsettling. In Your character, though, You would never send us out alone, leaving us to figure out where we’re going and what we’re supposed to do. Our faith is assured of this truth: wherever You lead us, You are going before us (Psalm 85:13). At times, You’re silent, just to test our faith. That gets uncomfortable. We faced with a choice: will I stay committed or jump ship when I can’t see Your hand at work? Lord, increase our faith that we may remain faithful and rejoice in all circumstances, simply knowing You are always with us (Philippians 4:4).

Forgive our sins, help us order our lives according to Your precepts and live by Your moral standards. Help us love one another as You love us. Bring peace to our land as we humble ourselves before You.

Jesus, where You lead, I will follow. Amen.

Good morning, Jesus.

Lord, it’s such a subtle trap that causes many Christ-followers to stumble. You warned us how easily “acting religious,” can replace our personal relationship with You. In the past, I’ve stood guilty of this vanity. The enemy strokes our egos with lies how our good behaviors and outstanding moral stances make us a cut above others. We may have an imperfection or two, but we’re still pretty good. We’ve forgotten the truth of Romans 3:23. Before we realized it, our virtue-signaling, “acting good” without grace, to show others how holy we are when compared to “sinners,” replaced our need for Christ in our lives. Forgive me, Lord, Keep me from being so religious that I never forget what Your incredible grace did for me. May I never take lightly where I was and where You have brought me. May I never lose how to love You, and please give me the grace to love and forgive others, just as You did for me.

Again, we ask today for Your protection, provision and mercy for our friends affected by the wildfires in the western states. We remember our friends in the south facing the floods from the now tamed Hurricane Sally. Thank You, Lord, for being merciful to all. Protect all first responders, emergency personnel, police, firefighters, medical workers, all who put their lives on the line to serve others. Forgive our sins, heal our people as we turn back to You, Lord God.

Remembering Your grace, Lord God. Amen.

Good morning, Jesus.

Lord Jesus, how frustrated I was trying to win Your favor and acceptance by my many “good” works, all in the attempt to earn enough brownie points to earn salvation. I couldn’t keep up with the balance sheet of “good works” versus “bad things I do.” Was it enough? What if I missed something? You saw how the emotional distress kept me in doubt. You knew from the beginning no human could hold up under the pressure of earning salvation by our own efforts. Your plan all along had You destroying everything that could cause my eternal ruin by Your sinless sacrifice on the cross. Only Your innocent shed blood could cover and forgive my sins (Hebrews 9:22). When I ceased my endeavors to save myself and humbly placed my trust in Your redeeming work on the cross, You accepted me with open arms into Your Kingdom. Talk about relief! I finally understood the extent of Your grace and peace beyond human understanding.

Bless and protect our friends affected by the wildfires in the west, and Hurricane Sally raging the Gulf coast. Be the Great I AM for them as they have never known before. Use these catastrophes to draw people to You.

Living free from pressure in You, Lord Jesus, Amen.

Good morning, Jesus.

Lord, as a Christ-follower, I’m not exempt from life’s challenges of all the woes that plague mankind. The ancient psalmist experienced the same, In his distress, he admitted he was at a loss and pleaded with you: “teach me how You want me to live” (Psalm 86:11). Nearly 3000 years later, this prayer is still relevant. If I’m to live as You want, I must submit to Your will. Help me choose Your ways over my self-centered agenda. Train my mind to think Your thoughts to suppress my carnal desires. Keep me from grumbling and complaining, but in faith, help me speak Your Word in all circumstances. If all Your followers do this, then we can live peaceful and meaningful lives. We desire everything we do honors You in this broken world.

We pray Your protection for our friends on the Gulf coast from the coming Hurricane Sally. Many are still recovering from Hurricane Laura and are struggling to keep afloat. May Your power to bless, protect, and provide for these dear folks be evident to all. Demonstrate Your divine goodness amid this storm and draw people to You.

We pray Your mercy for the two Los Angeles deputies shot in a senseless act of evil. We pray their complete and total recovery. May the perpetrator be brought to justice. Forgive our sins, heal our nation. Only You can replace chaos with peace, Lord God.

Choosing to live as You want me to live, Jesus. Amen.

Good morning, Jesus.

Lord, I’m so grateful for all You’ve done for me. May Your Spirit’s unconditional love in me be evident to all. Help me show people who think their many flaws make them unworthy of coming to You, let alone become one of Your disciples, that You are not mad at them. Nothing could be further from the truth. Who else do You have to work with down here but flawed people? Being a Christ-follower doesn’t magically erase my flaws. I’m still very much aware of my flaws and failures. At times I even act a little haughty, so I hardly see myself as perfect. However, being a Christ-follower makes us perfect in our heavenly Father’s eyes. He sees only Christ’s righteousness all over us as His Spirit is transforming us more into His image. How can He be mad at us for that!

We pray You send an abundance of rain to put out the wildfires raging out in the western states. Be merciful to those poor souls suffering from the devastation, those who have lost everything, who have lost loved ones. May they find You to be all they need to start a new life, that You can restore that which was destroyed.

Bring an end to this violence and anarchy that is plaguing so many cities. May these perpetrators be brought to justice. We pray complete recovery for the two deputies shot point blank for no other reason than being public servants. Lord God, we need You more now than ever. Forgive our sins, heal our souls.

May it be so in Jesus’ name. Amen.

The Lord keeps his eyes on the righteous. He hears their prayers. But the Lord’s anger is against those who do evil—1 Peter 3:12 (King Jimmy Translation).

“The Best of Humanity, the Worst of Humanity”

Do you remember where you were, what you were doing on September 11, 2001?

I remember my circumstances. Your humble Aggie scribe waited in the parts department at the shop, hoping my backordered parts had come in. At that time, the parts department had a TV mounted to the wall to keep customers entertained while they waited for hours, sometimes days, to get their parts. A crowd had gathered, watching the burning North Tower, one half of the iconic Twin Towers in New York City. An American Airlines 757 had crashed into it. The announcers were still calling this a horrible accident when the second plane, a 767, slammed into the South Tower. The gasps of witnessing such an act took the air out of the room. Could we believe what we just saw? In stunned disbelief, calls upon God were immediately uttered. Others offered curses using the same God. All work ceased. Needed parts weren’t so needed right now.

The people surrounding the TV in the parts department wondered who was behind all this. “We’re under attack,” some said. “No way,” others countered. “Not here in America.” “What group is behind this attack?” Questions flew around the room as to what we witnessed. When we thought it could not get worse, another 757 crashed into the Pentagon. Then within an hour came the report of a United 767, flight 93, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Speculations were this aircraft was headed toward the White House or the Capitol. We watched horrified as people leaned out the windows above the hellish blazes, waiting to be rescued. “God help them,” is all we could say. “Lord, have mercy.” Our emotions ripped us apart as we saw those who knew they were doomed, leap from the windows into eternity. Some jumped holding hands, not wanting to die alone. There are no human words we can us to show how evil forced us to witness its horrors. ‘Horrors’ seems too weak a word to describe what happened to humanity. No one should have had to see that.

Evil murdered over 3000 innocents that day, representing 115 countries. Their “crimes?” They came to work, they went on a business trip, they started their long-awaited vacation, they longed to see loved ones.

September 11, 2001 will forever be a dark day in America. It revealed the worst of humanity. In other parts of the world, people celebrated the destruction of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and the crashed 767. Videos of dancing and celebrating over the successful attacks repulsed every red-blooded American and our allies. Our righteous rage rose within us. September 11, 2001 brought out the worst of humanity.

More important, September 11 brought out the best of humanity too.

As the events unfolded, stories emerged about the courage of people. Stairwells were the only exit from the towers. People helped one another escape, some carrying the frail, handicapped, or wounded on their backs all the way down to safety. Race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, Republican, Democrat—none of that mattered. Humanity cared for one another. There were stories of those who could have escaped, but refused to leave those who were wounded until the first responders arrived. They never came out. People prayed with each other. As people called on God for mercy, I want to think there were no atheist left in the towers. The best of humanity.

Enough cannot be said about the firemen, police and emergency responder who rushed into the buildings, up the stairwells, as others rushed out to safety. Their courage to save others overruled the dangers they raced into. The New York Fire Department lost 343 firefighters and paramedics. The New York Police Department and the New York Port Authority lost 59 officers. They gave their lives to save others. God rest their souls. The best of humanity.

At the Pentagon, 184 perished. Rank mattered little as military brass worked side-by-side with the enlisted people, civilians and politicians worked together, clerks and visitors helped one another without thought of their own safety. The best of humanity loving humanity.

On Flight 93, after the hijackers commandeered the aircraft and turned the aircraft toward D.C. the passengers bravely took matters into their hands. Todd Beamer, a committed follower of Jesus Christ, led the charge. His holy rallying cry of “Let’s Roll” is now part of the American lexicon. Knowing they were now not heading to San Francisco but headed toward eternity, they regained entry into the cockpit to overpower the hijackers. They crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Everyday people fighting evil—and triumphed. The best of humanity.

America came together in common purpose as she did in World War II. How the terrorists meant to bring harm to us instead brought out the good in us. Although we saw the worst of humanity that day, we saw the best of humanity more. Differences were put aside and Americans were committed to one another. We were united.

Missionary Lucas Ellis stated so perfectly the spirit of 9/11. “The difference between someone who is scared and someone who is brave is that the brave person is scared, but tries anyway. Bravery cannot exist without fear.”

I called Mrs. Aggie, who worked outside the home at that time. She was crying. Her voice trembled. Their office also watched the second plane hit. Like us, the scenes on TV seemed surreal. Her attempts to reach our two daughters to check on their wellbeing failed, but they were probably communicating with their spouses and children. We called our friends and loved ones to check on them.

Lord, unite us again. Forgive our sins and let us see one another as you see us. Help us live together in harmony and peace. Lord, we have no one else we can call on.

Stay close to Jesus.

Thankful I Need You Jesus

Tuesday, September 8, 2020

Good morning, Jesus.

Lord, You are so patient with me. Your Spirit works tirelessly to eliminate my “not wanting to leave without a fight” self-centeredness. When I’m in my stubborn will, I insist life goes my way, and I mean right now! Nonetheless, Your Spirit nudges me to stay close to You. Then, with each failing, and I’m kicking myself for the mess I’ve made, You remind me without condemnation why I need You Jesus, my Savior. Life is so much easier when I’m submitted to You. I realize how much I need You today more than I did yesterday, and I will need You even more tomorrow.

We pray for your continued grace, protection and provision for our friends facing the wildfires destruction in California, Arizona, Utah, and Texas. Strengthen the first responders, medics, firefighters and emergency personnel battling these fires. Protect them all. May the goodness of people and the grace of Your church be there for them. Use these fires to draw people to You, especially skeptics or those who had not given You a second thought before. And let’s remember our friends in Louisiana, recovering from Hurricane Laura. As only You can, Lord, bring good out of all this destruction.

Forgive our sins, heal our nation. Lord, however You choose to do it, bring an end to the violence raging in many cities.

Needing You today even more, Jesus. Amen

Good morning, Jesus.

Lord, today’s trials will challenge the depth of my faith. Unexpected problems or unintended or hostile offenses will reveal to me, and especially others who watch me, how much I’ve allowed Your Spirit to change my life. This road of “sanctification” of spiritual improvement You lead me on does not lack surprises. My spirit is now awakened to the subtle traps the enemy of my soul lays along the way. I can’t believe the lies he tells trying to distract me, but his plans will backfire. As I keep my eyes on You, Jesus, what the enemy meant to make me stumble becomes a stepping-stone to becoming more like You. As the apostle Paul wrote, “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you” (Romans 16:20). Oh, yeah! Another crush on the serpent’s head.

Learning to love one another is also another stop on this road of sanctification. Teach us how to love other as You love. Forgive our sins, heal our nation. May all who call themselves Christ-followers act and love as You do, Lord Jesus.

Enjoying my life’s journey with You, Jesus. Amen.

Good morning, Jesus.

Lord, on this Thankful Thursday. You couldn’t make Your point clearer to me with this meme: “If you could kick the person responsible for most of your troubles, you wouldn’t be able to sit down for a week.” Looking back, many of my troubles came from unwise choices on my part. Oh, Lord, help me corral my self-control to not be so impulsive to act without thinking. Let me do Your will, so my actions will not harm the cause of Christ. As You transform my heart, my actions and words, I pray I’ll always sit comfortably.

Thankful to sit comfortably with You Jesus, Amen.

Lord, my soul lived in constant uncertainty when my relationship with You depended on my performance. I endlessly worked hard at trying to be good, but I always wondered if my performance earned me enough points for salvation. Finally, by Your grace, I discovered Your grace through Jesus. What a change! With a heart of gratitude, my relationship with You changed after I realized Your grace accepts me as I am, warts and flaws all. What a blessing to know my salvation is by Your grace and not my efforts. For those who live in the freedom of Your grace, we’ve entered that “rest” Your Word describes in Hebrews 4:10, “for anyone who enters God’s rest also rest from their works . . .”

Resting in Your grace, Lord. Amen
