Lord, how did we allow this sacred Advent season to become such a pressure cooker that makes people crazy trying to outdo last year’s Christmas events? How quickly we crowd You out of the celebration of Your birth with holiday parties, gift buying, home decorating—even church Christmas play rehearsals. People running this way and that, looking for that perfect gift, which will probably end up in a springtime garage sale. Security officers breaking up fights between shoppers over that last “hot item” Christmas toy that will make little Johnny or little Susie so happy, all done, of course, in the “spirit of Christmas?” Forgive us, Lord. It seems we have forgotten how to keep “Christ” in Christmas.
Since the Garden, sin has totally corrupted mankind and sentenced man to a horrible eternity without hope and without God. The story of Christmas is Your story of Love for lost mankind. The story of Christmas declares the Light has come into the world to claim victory over spiritual darkness (John 1:4,5). You didn’t have to, but You left the splendors of heaven and became one of us, a baby born of a virgin, God in human flesh who lived as we live in this broken world, yet without sin to willingly become the sacrificial “Lamb of God” who takes away the sins of the world and give everlasting life to all who believe (John 3:16,17). Christmas is the message of hope. Christmas is about You coming to save us.
May we always remember You, Jesus, are the “Christ” in Christmas. Amen.
