Lord, recent tragic events have put a damper on this Thanksgiving season and caused many dear folks to fear and slip into negative attitudes. The non-stop bickering and divisiveness hampers our struggles just to keep our sanity. For Christ-followers, it’s a daily battle of faith to maintain a thankful spirit. However, this battle is nothing new. The devil has waged this war against believers since the Garden. The Philippian believers, although persecuted overcame the same challenge we face. “Rejoice in the Lord always,” the apostle Paul wrote, but his wise counsel warned them victory over a negative spirit required effort and discipline on their (our) part. “Be anxious for nothing, but in every situation, with prayer [and] thanksgiving, tell God what you need.” (Oh, Lord, I need Your help on this part!) “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think, meditate, and dwell about such things” (Philippians 4:4-9) That strategy still works today.
Lord, help me to follow 2 Corinthians 10:5, to “demolish arguments . . . and take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Amen.
